A Seedy Situation
Growing plants from seed is not as challenging as many people think it is. All you have to do is remember a few simple rules, and you should have thriving seedlings in no time.
Rule # 1: Follow the package instructions. If the label says to plant the seeds 1/2 inch deep, then do not plant them deeper. Seeds require a combination of elements to germinate, including sunlight and air. Also keep an eye on the planting times. Some seeds should be planted at certain times of the year.
Rule # 2: Do not drown your seeds. The most common mistake of seed growers is overwatering. You want to keep the soil damp, but not soaking wet. Too much moisture can encourage rot, fungus, and insects. If your soil is damp to the touch, do not water it.
Rule # 3: Always remember that most plants need sunlight to survive. However you have chosen to plant your seeds, whether in a group or individually, keep them in the sun or under a grow light until they are ready to go outside. Until the seedling emerges from the soil, it is also a good idea to keep them covered with a plastic lid or plastic wrap. You will need to open the covering occasionally to let out some of the moisture that will build up.
Rule # 4: An emerging seedling does not mean your job is done. Seedlings, like any babies, are going to need some special attention fo a while. You will need to trim off the seed leaves once the second set of leaves comes out. Doing this helps the plants to fill out.
If you dumped a seed package in a pot or on the ground to see what would happen, you will need to thin the seedlings out to keep them from getting overcrowded. This ensures that the remaining plants will be able to get as many nutrients as they need without having to complete with too many other plants.
Rule # 5: Have fun. Growing plants is supposed to be a relaxing pasttime, not stressful. Most plants are pretty forgiving of small mistakes, so don't be afraid to make some. If you have questions, call us, or research on the internet. Do not let worry over doing something wrong eclipse your enjoyment of the task itself.
